Prudence Mak 麥 雅 端

b. 1 9 7 8  (Hong Kong)

Born in Hong Kong, a daughter of a tailor, Prudence Mak graduated from Central St. Martins, University of Arts London in 2009 with a MA in Apply Imagination, and in 1999 with a Degree of Fine Arts in University of Lethbridge, whereby her paintings follow Western art world both in technique and in subject matter and materials. Her art incorporates elements of sewing, and patchwork influenced by her mother in different eras.

Prudence's painting techniques are not only from the surrealist period, in which she adopts the power of the unconscious and childhood dreams but also from growing up in the late 1980s with the Nipponese Neo popular elements of expression, such as the Japanese “anime pop" generation, she borrows contemporary  (animation), manga (comics), and American pop art. She reworks this diversity of influences into a myriad of artistic media and formats, artwork ranging from paintings reminiscent of cartoons to figurine sculptures, giant inflatable balloons, handcrafted accessories, and other limited-edition merchandise.

To catch inspiration, Prudence Mak opens her arms in her imagination, recalling childhood memories and welcoming the world of subconsciousness. The overwhelming solitude of those moments turns into pleasure and lets her become one with the painting. She picks up her brush and begins a conversation with the inner child that’s inside the picture. She wishes it provokes you to have a conversation with yourself. Her paintings will allow the audience to really come deeper into their own memories and speaks to their inner child.
